Gerry Butler, Taurus Stunt Awards 2007 on TV

So, I just watched the televised version of the Taurus World Stunt Awards with my friend Christine London. Since we were both at the awards presentation at Paramount Studios we were curious how they would edit what really happened. A few things surprised us.

For example: They allowed Gerry to talk about "leather underpants and red capes", but they didn't go into any detail about some of the awards, like "Hardest Hit". Originally, it was very informative. They explained more than they would need to for its audience, about the "Hardest Hit" award because all of them (except us, it seems) were stunt people and they would already know that there are no special effects for that kind of stunt. It is pure guts and training to keep from injuring yourself and even then some get hurt - understandably! It would have made sense to inform the public viewer about that one.

Also, I wonder when Hollywood will give us what we want, like more candid conversations from the actors we love? Even directors, these days, get to talk about their thoughts and feeling more than the actors. Yes, we get to see them on talk shows, but have you ever been to a talk show taping? Well, Christine and I have and it is frighteningly fast paced with almost no time to collect your thoughts. The stars must answer pointed questions and pump their newest film rather than spend time with their fans. We want to hear Gerard talk about his childhood or his favourite places to eat. We did get to saw Gerry Butler on the Late, Late show with Craig Ferguson (another Scot) and that was fun. The two already knew each other and Gerry was fairly rested from the "300" ordeal, so their banter was more lighthearted than for most. On that show they talked about Gerry's attempts to stop smoking and it was refreshing to have some insight into the man and learn that he has tried everything and some techniques he has tried several times! Yikes! If a guy like Mr. Butler can't stop, maybe we don't have to be so hard on ourselves with our perceived weaknesses - we can still be strong in other venues, like him. This is what we want; real time with our heroes. Quit editing out the cool stuff!

Actually, they did let Gerry talk quit a bit at the awards - in real life. So much so that at the end of his time on stage, (those of you that saw the edited TV show) you heard Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson say, "I could'a whooped him...but he could'a talked us to death!" That would have made more sense if we could have been given all of Gerry's air time.

Yeah, I know we gotta be fair and there is only so much time available and the sponsors have to assail us with their product hype, but we still want what we want. That's why reality TV was such a smash hit. Only problem was, normal people were put into unreal situations. How about putting some extraordinary people, like Gerard Butler or Johnny Depp, in a real situation and let him talk about what's on his mind? Hollywood, hear my plea!
