Romantic Times Convention in Pittsburg

Had I only known how much partying there would be at RT (short for Romantic Times) I might have slept a bit beforehand! Every single night – costumes, live music, half naked young men pumped for beauty rather than strength, alcohol, food, chocolate (deserves to be in a category by itself), publishers, agents, editors, …oh, and a blowout show based on shoes hosted by Dorchester Publishing - a author’s dream worth writing about!

The extra cool thing about RT is that it’s for readers, too. I knew about it, sure, but didn’t put 2 & 2 together until after a few days. This is where the end of the rainbow hangs out! A writer is, of course, a story teller. We all tell stories around camp fires and in line at the bank, but a writer goes the extra mile by putting the tale on paper or in digital ink. When a customer buys a book we have a win / win situation. The reader gets a trip to Italy with a cute mate or a ticket to travel through time – for less then dinner at Denny’s. The writer makes a little cash, allowing them to write another day.

But where does an author find the readers of their particular genre to let them know about their newest adventure? You can’t tap someone on the shoulder at Barnes and Noble’s and convince them to buy 50 copies of your paperback. OK, so there’s the book signings but most of the people present at those affairs are the writer’s friends and colleagues. We need hundreds more fans to stay afloat. So, we spend hours on MySpace, we blog, we join forums, we gather at book fairs but at RT the readers are already primed for us. They are excited to meet and greet new and trusted writers of their favourite flavours: Paranormal, suspense, romantic comedy, magic, even horror. This, ladies and gentlemen, is novel nirvana!

Friends Niki Chanel and Christine London were met by Barbara Vey from Publisher’s Weekly as we were leaving. (Google her - she's everywhere!) She wanted to show us her “Flip” video camera. You shoot, plug into a USB port and voila! You’re on YouTube. The thing looks rather iPod-ish so you could find yourself trying to stick headphones into your camera, but so what. Instead, why not laugh at us in her mini vid interview:

(We had stage fright for the first run, so this version has us adlibbing against the clock – pressure! We’re a bit goofy, if you ask me.)

The other truly outstanding aspect of the Romantic Times Conference is the presence of numerous male cover models. Yes, you heard me right: MALE COVER MODELS. Each one is the perfect man. Gorgeous, cute, handsome; polite, enthusiastic, gentle; just the right amount of physical and not at all camera shy. The perfect man for the perfect date and you don’t even have to call them in the morning! ^.^

I implore you, readers: come see us at the next RT conference – you’ll be glad you did!

The 2009 RT get together will be in Orlando, Florida at the Wyndham Orlando Resort. Bring your swimsuit!
