"Do you want the $5 (matinee) tickets or the $11 tickets?"
"Huh?"
"Oh, the $11 are for 3D."
"Well, sure we want to pay more!" Isn't that always the answer? It was, however, a good choice. Very cool special effects that make you try to jump out of the way when something fly’s at you. You want to reach into the film to catch falling things or touch the surface of the water. But it is all in your head. Not just because this is a movie, but because the actors are digital - everything is digital. Yet so life-like you can see every pore of the King's skin (played by Anthony Perkins and rotoscoped using his voice-over) and see the sadness in his eyes. Ray Winstone is a great muscle-bound hunk that strips in his first scene (woo woo!)and Angelina makes for a yummy eyeful, as well (of course). Hollywood really dished it out.
The story was changed a bit from other Beowulf story lines I have seen before - like the one with Gerry Butler. That was live action, but it was still so foreign to our modern life-style that it was as odd as the digital tale. Both are very entertaining and educational. Afterward, there is lots to digest about the sins of our forefathers and why men can't just say 'no'.
All in all, a pretty good weekend - wouldn't you say?
